My DRx Journey - Part I. Consultation

Saturday, February 23, 2013
After this post... everyone is gonna rush to get their hands on my trusty Casio Exilim TR150.

Anyway, I'm sure if you've been following my blog you'd have noticed the lack of reviews as opposed  to in the past. I don't remember exactly when, but the condition of my skin really dipped. My forehead was sooo clogged and I didn't want to go out and be seen without makeup ):. It was recently that I decided that I've had enough - and was going to seek professional help for it. Even B, who usually doesn't really notice, commented on how bad my skin had been ))):.

My choice was DRx Clinic, which is located very conveniently at Tong Building (the building between Lucky Plaza and Paragon, otherwise recognised as "The Rolex Building"), after seeing so many great reviews on them and their Derma-Rx products. I checked out the website and decided that this was where I wanted to spend my money at.
(*I want to clarify here that I am now thankfully being sponsored by them, but my review on their journey would still be 100% honest because I was already prepared to pay for my treatment and still blog about my journey.)

Consultation will range from $50~$80, depending on the doctor - and subsequent visits will cost $35~$50. Appointments can be made online via their website.

I made my appointment on a Friday afternoon (which was yesterday) right after lunch break. The clinic was easy to find, and has a very bright clean interior design.
I'll get into details of the room later on.

Being my first visit there, I was asked to fill up a short form with my personal details and such. Also, I personally liked that the clinic has a section for you to fill up with regards to the name you preferred to be addressed by. For me, a lot of people can't/wrongly pronounce my name "Yi Jing" but because "Jamie" isn't in my IC, I can't include it in my customer profile , so I find that this is really a little touch that makes it feel more customised. Also, at the prescription counter, your name will be called out just like normal clinics, so if you have a name that you don't like you'd love this little touch.

After filling up the form and discussing some details, a consultant ushered me into my doctor's consultation room.

My doctor was Dr. Angela Hwee, or Dr. Angela. She's a really nice and sweet lady... and not to mention that her skin is perfect. I want skin like hers!! I actually took a picture with her, but it's in the other memory card so I'll post it some other day. Consultations with Dr. Angela would be $50 and $35 for follow-up visits.
Dr. Angela started the consultation by taking a good look at my skin - with a magnifying glass that's equipped with something that resembles a ring light, and then proceeded to write in my card about the products to prescribe me with - just like a normal visit to the doctor's. She then told me about my skin condition, and about the products she prescribed which will help with which problems. Consultation was fast and easy with Dr Angela being a professional. I also told her about the problems I had with my back since years back and she prescribed me something for it as well.

After that, I was asked to go to the photo-taking room. This is where they take "before" shots of the client for profiling (so that doctors can monitor the progress) and will be kept confidential. Permission will be asked for should they want to use your images. Here are the "before" shots I took by myself at the clinic. Now you guys know why I swear by the Casio Exilim TR150 for face shots?!

Moving along, I was ushered into the "briefing room", which was where a consultant would brief us on how to use the products. Along with showing us the sample of the products (yours remain brand new until you open them yourself), with a user guide listing clear instructions on how to use them.

Afterwards, just take a seat and wait for your name to be called to pick up your prescription!
The cashier would lay out the items as prescribed, and go through the items to make sure nothing is missing. You will then have to sign a release to clarify that you have received said items.
If any of you are interested, here's the price list of the items. Some of the items I got weren't listed, but this is most of them. I will list down what I got in just a bit.

You will be asked to go for your consultation without make up on, but if you are self conscious about leaving the clinic without makeup, they have a private make up area for you to "put your face on".

The overall consultation took less than an hour - because it only took me an hour to tour the entire DRx Clinic and Spas, plus my consultation!

Here's what I left the clinic with. My customised regime! If you are looking to buy the items, I would suggest you go for the consultation as well to find out which products would really suit you best, as well as instructions on how to use them. For optimal effectiveness, you are to stop your existing skincare regime - which I was willing to do if this could solve my skin's problem.

Derma-Rx products are split up into 3 categories to compete a full regime.
1. Prime To prepare the skin for treatment or nourishment so that your skin can benefit best from the next step.
2. Remedy As the word suggests, to "solve" the skin's problems.
3. Protect Prevention is better than cure. There is no point in constantly having to solve problems with your skin if you are not protecting it.

The products are abbreviated so that people who have little education (say, our parents who are uneducated in English) will be able to call in and enquire about the products without a problem. I really like how they are constantly thinking of their customers! Also, the abbreviation makes it easier to remember the steps as well.

Also, do note that for the same products, others may be directed to use it differently. This will be a preliminary rundown of the items I received because I just started using them. Will review them after trying for a longer period of time!

1BCC.
Blemish-Care Cleanser, 120ml. Price unlisted. Gentle foaming cleanser containing triclosan (antiseptic) and tea tree oil extract for blemish-prone skin.

2

Also contains Allantoin, which helps to restore moisture to the skin, leaving it feeling revitalized and supple. To be used with a cotton pad, also serves to double cleanse the face to prep for following products.

CF
Comedone Formula. 25ml. S$78.11. CF is an award-winning natural formulation containing botanical extracts, which work to reduce the appearance of comedones (blackheads & whiteheads). Helps dissolve and soften comedones, as well as reduce sebaceous activity. To be applied thinly on oily areas.

AB
Alpha Beta Gel, 25ml. S$74.90. Exfoliant with AHA/BHA, to allow the outer layer of skin to shed more readily, at the same time preventing clogging. To be applied thinly over entire face, except sensitive areas (eye area, smile lines, side of nose).

*C
Max-C, 35ml. S$196.06. Potent anti-oxidant formula that targets premature skin aging with effects of skin lightening and acne control. Contains highest possible stable concentration of Vitamin C to counteract free radicals, encourage collagen and elastin production to control the adverse effect of photo-damage. To be applied thinly over the entire face.

BF
Blemish Formula, 25ml. S$74.90. Anti-acne formulation that reduces occurrence of break-outs. Controls production of excessive sebum and helps to soothe irritated skin. To be applied thinly over areas with blemishes.

ASL
Acne-Spot Lotion, 6ml. Price unlisted. To be applied onto acne spot (red pimples).

ABM
Anti-Blemish Mask, 60g. S$59.92. Intensive corrective mask for oily, congested, and blemish-prone skin. Removes excess oil, exfoliates, and cleanses pores. Clears comedones and help to control further break-puts and blemishes. Soothes and calm the skin, and can be used as spot treatment for break-outs. Only for my night regime, 2~4 times a week. Spread a generous layer over the face, avoiding eye area and lip area. Leave on for at least 30 minutes (I was directed to leave it on for an hour) before rinsing off.

Do you know that the sun is the greatest culprit in many skin care problems??
5B
Liposomal Sunscreen (SPF 30+). 60ml, S$62.06. Advanced water-and-sweat-resistant sunscreen, delivering board-spectrum protection against UV exposure. To be applied generously over face and neck in the day time, at least 15~30minutes before sun-exposure.

*They have tinted sunscreen available but I was advised against it because I have oily skin and this would be the most suitable for me.

Like I mentioned, while on the Derma-Rx regime, you will be advised to not use any other products to ensure maximum efficacy of the regime. However, you can still use makeup as per normal.

I also told you guys about me telling Dr Angela about my back problem, so she prescribed these two little bottles for me.

That's it for the products I received. I used them just last night and today the bumps on my forehead have become smaller!! I'm so glad! I'm not even exaggerating! I will be going back to visit Dr. Angela for my follow up in about 1 month's time! :)

After that, I was taken around the clinic and spa (they occupy the entire level 16, and half of level 14. Clinic is located at Level 16).

Other than skin care, DRx Clinic also does Trichology, Laser Treatments, and Facials. And they are very well loved by local magazines such as Harper's Bazaar!

Psssst, the oral supplement has won the title 3 years in a row!

Further in the consultation rooms, there is actually a private waiting area for patients who are going to get laser treatment done soon. Reason being that they usually need to have numbing cream pre-laser, and this is so that they don't have to be in the main waiting area exposed for all to see.

These 2 machines are in every treatment room!

And finally, the hair treatment area (@ Level 14)

I hope you guys enjoyed reading this post and let me know if you have any questions or are interested in anything in the comments section below! I will do my best to answer to the best of my abilities, or refer your question back. Stay tuned for my next DRx update!

  1. Did you ended up spending over $500 for it ?
I mean, it is worth it if it can promise one clear skin. But if students go, they might have to know abt the fees beforehand, saving up for it prior going for consultation.

    1. The list of products I got that has their price stated + the $50 consultation fee amounts to over $600, so I guess my trip there would have cost me $600~$700ish. Just that got to save up, as students like me cant afford it yet.
Anticipating for more reviews ;) after you tried the products for longer time.

    4. I hope this isn't a rude question, but could skin problems be caused by not removing makeup correctly ? After all, there are chemical components in make-up products, and it may clog pores.

Btw, is it advisable to use bb cream just on areas that one have acne at ? I am fearful of using it on the whole face, but worry that the bb cream colour doesn't match my original skin tone.

May I also know which are the sigma brush for bb cream application ? Is it stippling brush ?

      Delete
    5. It isn't, no worries. Yup they could, because leftover makeup residue may irritate your skin. I always made sure I double-cleansed so I don't think that was the cause of it. Maybe it is because I wax my eyebrows and left the empty hair follicles for the sebum to get caught into, haha.

BB creams are supposed to be lightweight and you should have no problems with it applied all over your whole face, especially if you're worried that it won't match your skin tone. However, some BB creams tend to clog pores (some only clog your pores if worn for over x hours) so do take note of that. If possible, try not to wear makeup or remove them as soon as you get home.

For BB cream application, I personally find that applying with your fingertips works the best. They're formulated to be applied with fingertips, and the warmth of your fingers melts the product into your skin for a more natural application :).

    6. Thanks for the advice :) Yup, removing makeup is an important step, but some girls tend to neglect, esp if they reach home late. I noticed that my friend have a dark patch (eyeliner stain) on her eyelids, although she did not wear any makeup for that day.

It isn't possible for someone not to wear makeup, because it's rare to have baby smooth skin from such weather in SG.

    7. Get her to use a q-tip with makeup remover to clean the area properly! Our eyes are too delicate!

You don't have to have baby smooth skin to not wear make up, but just try to wear make up as little as you possibly can. The results of not wearing make up really shows - whether or not cleansed properly or not :)

    8. I have a few blemishes on my face, and I find it uncomfortable. Wanted to try bb cream but kiasu. Scared I used the wrong one and it clog pores. In addition, I have oily t-zone, but it is common with teens and adults right ? To have slightly oily skin.

      Delete
    9. Yup, it is common. Especially with such a warm climate like we have in Singapore. Try tinted moisturizers or sunblocks?

You can go for a consultation, and if you don't think you require the full regime (although recommended for better results; look at comment below this) you can just buy what you think you need for your blemishes :).

  4. Hi can I check with you, if I went there and would just like to purchase a few items like cleanse, tone and moisturizer, is that feasible? Cos I don't have like so much money for all the products.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You could do that but it is not recommended because you see best results with the full range, which is customised to combat all the skin concerns that you may face. There are patients who have bought partial products and don't see much improvement.

That being said, you will not be forced to buy the entire range - just let them know which products you want to get after the product briefing so that you will know how to use which products to combat certain problems. Hope this helps!

  5. Hi jamie may i know if the skin clears up do you still have to continue using their products? Cos im afraid of clinic whereby once you stop using their products everything is back to square one. And i do not wan to rely on using it. i did try maple clinic (also very popular for skin prob clinic) and realise that their products dont really work on me. So waste of time and money

    1. Hi there!
I've actually asked about this and the answer is no, you can choose to stop using their products once your skin has cleared up. They do however, recommend to continue using their products to maintain the post-clearing skin condition. There are people who chose to stop the regime after their skin has cleared up, but I was told that they would soon return after recurring problems from using non-professional skincare products like DermaRx's. Apparently, many also opt to keep to the regime after their skin recovers. Entirely up to your own choice.

Personally, I would say that prevention would most definitely be better than cure, so if you can afford it (i think follow-up regime requires only the basic stuff?), I would definitely suggest you keep with it.

For DRx, after your first consultation, you will be required to go back for a 2nd one at least. Treatment time will depend on individuals and you may be required to use different products if the doctor feels that the results are not optimal - I was presribed with oral supplements during my follow up.

      Hope this helps x :)

  9. Hi babe, read from your post that you were prescribed w pills for the back problem? How is it so far and can you share more about the pills? Normally, pills that control hormones work best but they are not good for women to consume too much. I wonder how could the pills help according to the doctor? And does one needs to be reliant on e pills (ie problem comes back once we stop consuming)?

    ReplyDelete

    1. The prescribed pills were not for my back problems but for the over-active male hormones (which is the cause of breakouts and oily skin usually). I'm not too sure about the reliance because I have yet to stop my course of 'em.

  13. I am concerned to read that the cleanser contained Triclosan. This is currently a very controversial agent to use as some studies have classed it as a probable human carcinogen (i.e. cancer causing substance) amongst other negative health concerns. This is of particular concern as Triclosan penetrates the skin on contact and enters the bloodstream. Currently, Triclosan's safety is under review by FDA and Health Canada.

Since i have a sensitive skin, their products doesnt suit me well therefore on my second purchase, i decided to switch to avene, yet still going to dr david for routine check.
So now in my hand i have bunch of drx products (complete acne range kit from blemish formula, comedone formula, foaming cleanser, blemish cleanser, alpha beta gel, lightener, hydrator and liposunmal sunscreen) all been used for Bout 1-2 mths with exp date mostly in 2016-17, only for lightener is 5/15 .
If you guys interested in trying the product without paying too much ( i prefer to sell the whole range) pls contact me at feliciauntoro@gmail.com. I would gladly send you the pict showing how much i ve been using it, exp date and of course so much cheaper too!
As you may know, regime is the same as what Mentioned above!

  50. It's been getting better but I'm think it might work better if you apply the lotion every day because I don't as it is a little difficult to apply on by myself.
